  • When I started reading this book it was pretty slow going but as i continued to read I coudnt put it down. Maya and Jamie are both tasked with canvasing for the special election coming up, and as time goes by they begin to care more about the election and each other.

This book makes you go through your teenage years again, but at a safe distance. I fell in love with Jamie AND Maya, over and over again. The narration is appropriate for the age of the characters, with witty banter but also the awkwardness of adolesence. The development of Maya and Jamie's relationship felt very real, and had me blushing too! Jamie's been dragged into this campaign by his cousin, and he would rather not spend his timeasking for people's votes, until he has to do it with his childhood bestfriend. Except she thinks he's a total klutz. But once politicians are passing laws that target Maya, her family, and culture, it's not just some shojo love story. For 2021, with the recent mess in politics, I think this is a great read. It talks abut racism, how awful it is for minorities to be mistreated, yet how easily these experiences are swept under the rug. I'm a fan of Becky Albertalli's work, so I think ths was a great collab with Aisha Saeed. I'd recommend you read this one!

  • DNF’d @ 20%

This book just wasn’t for me. I was bored and wasn’t liking how the cultural representation of the characters was developing.
