  • A Bittersweet Ending

Actual rating is 4.5! Wow. That was an epic, dark, and brutal adventure filled with memorable characters and wild fight scenes. This was a very expansive book that encompassed basically every character who ever crossed paths with Geralt and his friends. This led to some storylines that I didn't think really connected to the main with the main cast. The opening and beginning were a little jarring, since they connected to Arthurian legend, which I hadn't really expected but found a little interesting. This is definitely the finale, and to be honest, I'm a little conflicted about it. The big battle between the greatest enemies Geralt and Ciri faced happened earlier than I expected and while it was heart-wrenching and bloody and pulse-pounding, I felt that the ending dragged out a little too much and am still going to think on the final couple scenes before I decide how I feel about it. The characters all finished their arcs and growths, and yet again, Ciri was the biggest charmer. While she kind of frustrated me early on when she was going on along with who was choosing her destiny, I still adored her progress and strength and ferocity and final refusal to let anyone dictate her power and how to use it. The action was visceral and cringe-inducing at some points. The poor characters who died all got decent send-offs, even though I refuse to acknowledge certain deaths because I'm just so attached to particular characters. This was definitely a unique fantasy series and something I'd never read before. I definitely recommend it not just to fans of the video games and fans of dark, bloody fantasy.
