  • A Non Stop Epic

This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 and it did not disappoint. Gwynne pulls readers back into his non-stop, action packed, visceral, gritty Viking and Norse inspired saga. This is not a book for anyone who shies away from bloodshed. Gwynne pulls no punches with the violence, yet it never feels too over the top or in your face. It's a delicate balance between intensity and gore, but Gwynne treads the line nicely. He is also a master at weaving plot threads together. For the most part, the cast of characters is spread far and wide, but Gwynne does a great job of bringing them together right when they need to be, and dropping hints and foreshadowing that make the reader eager to see who and what clashes next. Orka is my all time favourite. She is ferocious, devoted, and has a good heart in her chest. Varg is also a great character who is becoming closer with his fellow warriors. Biorr was quite interesting given that he is back where he supposedly belongs. Gudvar also had an interesting arc, though I didn't enjoy him as a person. The same could be said for Elvar, though I found her growth by the end to be very exciting. The world building is immersive and demands attention. The author's writing requires direct focus so that you can dive deeper and enjoy the experiences of these warriors. It focuses primarily on the bonds forged in battle, though there is still space for some great character moments and shocking twists. I'm continuing to love this series, and while it ends on a cliffhanger that will keep me waiting until the next book, it is worth the wait. A must have for anyone who enjoys Viking/Norse mythology, intense action, and phenomenal world-building.

    Thanks for your feedback!
